In Memory

Anitra Bascom (Wirtz)

Anitra Bascom was born July 13, 1948, and lost her battle with Alzheimer's disease on September 11, 2021. Anitra is survived by her two children, Rodney and Sarah Wirtz and their spouses; three grandchildren, Austin Arvizo, Madelyn Wirtz, and Nico Wirtz; and her longtime partner, Patrick Mower.

She was born in Oakland, California, to Rhoda and Willard Bascom and spent much of her childhood on the east coast along with traveling the world.

Anitra was a registered nurse, counselor, and had a master's degree in public administration. Being a nurse, she had a soft spot for caring for the sick and would often help beach goers with sting ray injuries.

Anitra had many friends from coast to coast and internationally. No matter the distance or time, she always had a special place in her heart for each of them.

Aside from her friends and family surfing was her next greatest love. While she picked up this sport later in life, she fell in love with it and spent as much time in the water as possible. She traveled to Costa Rica, Mexico, and Portugal to ride the waves. She loved to hang out at "the bench" with her surfing friends, and if her family was with her, she would proudly introduce them.

Yesterday was my birthday, I turned 74. This morning I got this notice of her passing. I am never happy to see someone pass and if it was a difficult time for them..even worse,, I read the update and was happy to see that she had a good, productive life and did many wonderful things with it. That to me makes all the difference . We forget that our time here is limited . The end date is unknown to us, but eventually comes.
We collectively has lost many of our friends and classmates . The success in life to me is never counted by money or things it can buy. While that maybe a measurement some sort, the true success of how well anyone does is with the people they touched. That success in many ways is hard to measure, but when you read the many of the things she and others did, she was a total success to me.
In the end when the " White Train " comes for you, you redeem your ticket. Whether we are really judged by anyone at that time, I do not know. I salute and her and I do someone in the military, I stand and salute. These moments in the sun are what I choose to remember. I try not to be sad, although some are , for they were special people to me ........I believe that we will all meet again, on the other side of what ever there is. I hope that will be something she would have enjoy...a warm sunny day on the beach with the surf giving her a wonderful ride.....no pain or illness, perhaps returned to a younger age when her life was at that peak...she achieved this herself and those who loved her.
Surfs up !!!!!!!!
